The Granada city of Orce is home to the only commercial saffron exploitation in Andalusia. Behind this initiative hides a young entrepreneur who sought alternative crops so as not to have to abandon the family farming tradition.
Raúl Sánchez is a computer scientist and in 2015 he decided to work on the profitability of the lands of his ancestors, in the Granada city of Orce. It occurred to him to plant two square meters of La Mancha saffron bulbs on this farm. The experiment worked and it was then that he extended the plantation to one hectare. With his collaborators, he is in the middle of the campaign to collect this red gold.
This saffron field, except for the small area planted in the orchards of the Alhambra, is unique in Andalusia and has a commercial purpose. The project is also part of the Reorientation Platform, which offers advice to those seeking a change of rural life, through the study of viable business alternatives.
Raúl and his team created the brand "Azafrán del Oasis" for the direct sale of their product. In addition, they have organized a commercial network to export it to the countries of the Persian Gulf, where the kilo can reach 35,000 euros.
